Every time we come to Kauai I always hope to run into Bethany Hamilton (she lives in Hanalei (so does Puff the Magic Dragon!) and we always stay next door at Princeville).
I’ve been obsessed with Bethany for a few years now. For those of you who don’t know, she was a teenager (13, I think) when a shark bit her arm clear off. Over the years, she’s never complained about her situation — she always looks on the bright side and has become an inspiration to many young women, amputees, and regular folk who are going through normal crap (like me). I follow Bethany on Facebook and her spirit never ceases to amaze me. If you haven’t read her book or seen the movie about her (Soul Surfer) — run, don’t walk, to get both.
In short, Bethany is inspirational and super into God. Me, im not that into church or God (as a Hindu, I am polytheistic and am guessing I’ll be calling on a lot of our Gods starting next week!). BUT I do believe that everything happens for a reason. So, for some asshole reason, Paul and I were meant to walk this ridiculous path. One day, that reason will reveal itself and it will all make sense. Until then, I’m letting myself be human. I am TICKED, boy am I ticked. And when I’m not angry as all giddy up — lately I’ve been scared out of mind. Questioning if I have the strength and resolve to get through this in one piece (let alone gracefully — that’s the least of my concerns!). Paul will yell at me for writing this last line because he thinks I’m making myself sound weaker than I am in this blog. But it is what it is. These are my thoughts even if I act differently outwardly.
We just got back from having lunch at Tropical Taco (yummo) in Hanalei. We walked around town and then got a Mai Tai at Tahiti Nui. Much to my chagrin, there were no Bethany spottings. Shoot. Well, there’s always tomorrow…..
